A note on the Mecosta Area: I feel Big Rapids and the surrounding area is a great place to live. With the convenience of major stores like Walmart and Meijer to shop and the personal touch of the local merchants like Brian and Carlleen at the Old Pioneer Store & Emporium almost every need is within reach. Both City and County Police Departments are located in town and a full time Fire Department with a brand new facility so you can feel safe at night. And with Mecosta County Medical Center (Congrats on making the Top 100 hospitals in the nation in 2005) here as well as several family and specialty doctors your are never far from help if you need it. Every school in the Big Rapids district has met rigorous national standards for quality established by the North Central Association. Big Rapids continues to be one of a select group of school districts state-wide accredited in all schools K-12. Ferris State University and the thousands of new students coming to join us every year keep a freshness to the already diverse population. Even with the City of Big Rapids growing every minute you can go 5 miles in almost any direction and be in the country. Hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, hiking or tubing on the mighty Muskegon River are just a few of the areas many things to do. No matter what season there is plenty to do for everyone. Experience a hockey game at Ferris's Wink Arena or a play at Stage "M". Downtown take a stroll through Artworks or grab a bite at the Blue Cow Cafe. If outdoors is your game there are many public access sites and lots of state land around the area to allow everyone a chance to play. One of the areas treasures is the North End Riverside Park. It has a large parking area, two pavilions capable of holding the largest of families, children's playground, horseshoe pits, volley ball courts all connected to a walk/bike path that goes all the way through Hemlock Park, where you'll find our "Playscape" and then walk along the Muskegon River to Maple Street. On the other end it connects to the "Rails to Trails". There are several spots along the path to stop and enjoy or fish for awhile. If you haven't checked it out yet, GO TODAY!!!
